# Sorting Methods

The sorting method determines the exact logic NostalgiaTV uses to pick and stream files throughout your 8-hour guide blocks. Choosing the right algorithm allows you to accurately replicate the distinct feel of different broadcasting networks.

#### 🎲 1. Random Variety Modes

Ideal for classic general-entertainment mix channels where unpredictability is preferred.

* **Random:** A pure, completely randomized variety-mix mode\[cite: 24]. It shuffles all assigned content across your libraries with no regard for series order or episode numbers\[cite: 24].
* **Block Shuffle:** Designed to create a "Mini-Marathon" feel\[cite: 24]. The engine selects a series at random, plays a block of 2–4 episodes back-to-back, and then switches to a completely different series\[cite: 24]. The episodes within that block are chosen randomly rather than sequentially\[cite: 24].

#### ⏳ 2. Sequential & Binge Modes

Perfect for narrative-driven networks, movie channels, or dedicated marathons where viewing order matters.

* **Cyclic:** Preserves chronological episode order (e.g., S01E01 is strictly followed by S01E02) across your broadcast blocks\[cite: 9, 24]. For movies, this mode starts them in a randomized order but maintains a persistent sequence over time\[cite: 26]. Once the library reaches the final item, it seamlessly loops back to the beginning\[cite: 24].
* **Block Cyclic:** Recreates traditional "appointment viewing" blocks\[cite: 24]. The system plays a sequential block of 2–4 episodes of a single show in strict chronological order (S01E01, S01E02, S01E03) before moving to a sequential block of the next series in your library pool\[cite: 9, 24].
* **Marathon Shuffle:** Picks a show at random and locks onto it, ignoring standard channel transitions to generate a continuous, multi-hour marathon block of that specific title with randomized episode selection\[cite: 26].
* **Marathon Cyclic:** Functions identically to the Marathon Shuffle, but forces the multi-hour block to play the selected show's episodes in strict chronological order\[cite: 26].

#### 🔂 3. Balanced Variety Modes (Round Robin)

Designed for variety channels with massive libraries. Standard shuffling can accidentally cause a giant show with 300 episodes to drown out a smaller series with only 10. Round Robin modes eliminate this problem entirely.

* **Round Robin Shuffle:** Automatically shuffles your series list, picks exactly *one* episode from Show A, moves to exactly *one* episode from Show B, and continues down the list before repeating, ensuring every single series gets equal representation in the rotation\[cite: 26].
* **Round Robin Cyclic:** Follows the same strict one-episode-per-show rotation rule as the shuffle variant, but ensures that when a series comes back up in the rotation, its next episode plays in perfect chronological order\[cite: 26].
